It’s the premier for our production of Freedom Writers on Sunday and I just finished the posters for it! We’re going to put up five different ones, one for each ethnicity and one with six of the main characters. It has been quite hard getting all the costumes and make-up for all the characters but we’re getting there and I’m so excited! I’ve been looking forward to this since autumn. It’s finally time!
Freedom Writers is inspired by a true story and the diaries of real Long Beach students after the LA riots during the worst interracial gang warfare. The newly-appointed teacher Erin Gruwell is passionate about helping the students at Woodrow High but is soon challenged by a group of Black, Latino and Asian students who only hate her more than they hate each other during this interracial war. When Erin begins to listen to them in a way no other adult ever has she begins to understand that these kids go through enough outside of school to care about what happens in school. They are fighting for survival in a war of the streets that started long before they were born. For the first time they feel that they might be able to show the world that they matter and that they have something to say, only because of this teacher.
